Sunrise Coast

Close the wharf, the Sunrise Coast offers travelers an excellent base to explore Savaii.  Take time, particularly at dawn and dusk, to soak up the sounds and sites of the islands as the sun and moon rise over the lagoons and at dusk the cooking fires perfume the air.  The Sunrise Coast offers a wide range of accommodation from small boutique resorts, simple hotels, beach fales and in Salelologa budget or backpackers accommodations.

Mt Tafua Crater
Climbing Mt Tafua is an exhilarating experience for the energetic and fit nature lovers.  There are two craters and it is fairly strenuous climb to the higher western crater which is the more scenic. The view from the top is impressive, looking out over the rainforest canopy below and with a panoramic view over Savaii’s volcanic cone studded interior and down to local villages.   Take the time to look for the diurnal Samoan Flying Fox and listen out for native pigeons.  To find the track to the crater, look for the sign in Tafua Village.
Salelologa  Market
While Savaii never really gets much “hustle & bustle”, what there is can be found at the  Salelologa Market.  Browse the handcraft stores, choose a lavalava, pick up fresh local fruit or something for a picnic lunch. If you need items from a regular shop, Frankies Supermarket across the road is the largest on the island.
John Williams Monument, Sapapalii
This is a tomb/monument of significant history to Samoans. John Williams was the well known Missionary who introduced Christianity into Samoa. A large traditional monument is clearly visible from the side of the road depicting his landing spot over 150yrs ago
