Shopping

Samoa is becoming well known for its virgin coconut oil — much of which is grown in Savaii — and its coffee and cocoa, known here as koko.   These products, along with colourful lavalava (a traditional Samoan garment similar to a Balinese sarong), make lovely gifts to take home and can be purchased from a selection at the Savaii Tourist Information Centre in Salelologa. Lavalavas are also available from the Big Island CCK store in Salelologa, where you can pick up basic clothing and fabrics, or from any one of the stalls along Salelologa's main street.

The Salelologa Market is a great place to visit to purchase local handcrafts, lavalavas, Samoan style clothing and hats, as well as takeaway food, and fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. Fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, koko samoa and coconut oil for cooking can also be bought from the numerous roadside stalls that pepper the island.

Opposite Salelologa Market is Frankie's — the largest supermarket on Savaii. Frankie's stocks most grocery items, and has bakery, butchery, cold foods and produce sections.  There are also some larger local convenience stores located at Lalomalava (beside the petrol station), Tuasivi (opposite the hospital), Fagamalo (opposite Le Legoto resort & Spa) and in Asau, which stock food, supplies and a range of basic toiletries (liquid soap, shampoo, insect repellent, etc.).  T & M Retzlaff's store, opposite the Savaii Tourist Information Centre in Salelologa, has a wider range of toiletries.  Tampons, condoms and medicines are available from the Aiga Manuia Clinic shop  at Lalomalava (behind the petrol station).
