The white sand beaches of Savaii are pristine and the lagoons sparkling blue. Whether sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling, walking, or just watching the sunset — the 'Big Island' is truly a beach lovers' paradise.
Outside of your resort or beach fale, make sure you check where it is ok to swim — you may need to pay a small charge in some villages.
Also, while bikinis and bathing suits are absolutely fine for swimming at resorts and beach fales, don't forget to cover up with shorts or a lavalava and a t-shirt when swimming in the villages.
Topless (for women) and nude swimming is illegal in Samoa and would be seen by locals as highly offensive.

Asau Bay, Sunset Coast
Because Asau Bay has only a few natural sandy beaches, the best place to swim is the lovely, family run, Vai-i-Moana Seaside Lodge. It has a small white sand beach with easy access and kayaks to paddle over to the nearby island beaches.
And while you are visiting Asau, don't miss out on the highly recommended Va-i-Moana food — especially if you like fish!

Falealupo Beach, Sunset Coast
At the far western end of Savaii is Falealupo, home to many of the ancient legends of Samoa, and until a few years ago, the last place on earth the see the sun set into the ocean.
The beaches here have beautiful white sand and wild blue lagoons. In this area it is not uncommon to be asked by numerous different people for money for swimming. To avoid annoyance, pay a small fee to swim at the Falealupo Beach Fales beach. In this area, lock your car and make sure you keep an eye on personal possessions.

Afu Aau Waterfall, Surf Coast
While not actually beach, the beautiful Afu Aau Waterfall is one of the best places for a swim in Savaii.
Crystal clear water runs from the main waterfall into a large freshwater swimming hole, fringed with ferns and tropical vegetation. The cool freshwater then flows into several smaller waterfalls and pools. The series of pools is a great place for a swim, a picnic, or just to sit quietly and contemplate nature.
Afu Aau is a short drive from Salelologa; an easy stop on your way to the ferry.
