Taxis

Taxis are plentiful and well priced in Samoa. Prices are set based on distance so confirm the price with the driver before starting out.  To ensure you only pay the correct rate, pick up a detailed price list from the Savaii Tourist Information Centre for a small fee or download from here.  Please note that this is only an estimate fare and prices can vary, best to have an idea how much a fare should cost, and then ask before you enter the taxi for the estimate fare before agreeing to take a particular taxi.
Fares provided here are adopted from the Land Transport Authority's revised Road Traffic Order 2014, effective 28 April 2014.

Driving

Driving is a pleasure in Savai'i.

The roads are quiet and drivers are generally very courteous and considerate.  Pedestrians, cyclists & animals share the road with vehicles, therefore drive carefully, particularly after dark and do not exceed speed limits.  Most villages have a sunset curfew which lasts around 30 minutes; you will see the village men lining the road at this time and may hear a conch or horn blown at the start and finish.  Slow right down and be prepared to stop and wait for the curfew to end if requested.   Savaii roads have limited signage; you will need a tourist map which are readily available from our Tourist Information Centre.

When you exit the ferry, head left for the market or Lusia's Lagoon Chalets and right  for everything else.  Join the coastal ring road at Savaii's only traffic lights; left for Surf & Sunset Coasts (south and west) and right for Sunrise and Sunshine Coasts (east and north).

Approximate driving distances from Salelologa wharf are:
Lalomalava (The Savaiian Hotel) - 10 min
Faga (Siufaga Beach Resort) - 15 min
Lano (Joelan's & Lauiula Beach Fales) - 25 min
Saleaula (Bayview Resort & Lopana) - 50 min
Fagamalo (Le Lagoto & Savaii Lagoon Resorts) - 1 hour
Manase (Regina's, Vacations, Tailua, Janes & Tanu Beach Fales and Stevensons) - 1 hour
Asau/Vaisala (Va-i-Moana, Auga & Vaisala Hotel) 2-2.5 hours - either south or north route
Falealupo (Beach Fales) - 1.5-2 hours hours
Satuiatua (Beach Fales) - 1.5 hours
Palauli (Aganoa Beach Resort) - 10 min

Petrol stations are at Salelologa, Lalomalava, Maota, Saleaula, and Asau.  Most are open 7am-6pm except Sundays (On Sundays, the petrol station at Lalomalava is open for 1 hour (7-8am) on Sunday morning and the one at Saleaula is open until 4pm)

Temporary Samoan licenses are required and are available from Land Transport Authority and most rental car companies.

Buses

For a genuinely Samoan experience at minimal cost, a ride on a colourful local bus is a must!  They can be crowded so it is recommended you save this adventure for when you don’t have luggage.

In Salelologa, catch buses from the wharf or market, particularly if going past the Sunrise Coast as they may not pick up passengers in town after there.    From your resort, check bus departures with your hotel or resort; there is no published timetable and the hotel will know  when the next bus is expected.

Useful tips:
  • Be Quick - Most buses depart from the wharf immediately after the ferry has disembarked. You need to be quick to get a seat on the bus, otherwise you will most probably wait for the next bus or alternatively catch a taxi.
  • Right Bus - Bus names are written above the windscreen. Always check you are on the right bus by checking your destination with the driver
  • Last Buses: The last buses leaving Salelologa town are at 5pm from the Salelologa wharf, after the last ferry from Upolu arrives. For last buses leaving your hotel, always ask your hotel reception. There are no scheduled times for the buses and it can be difficult getting back to town as most buses leave their destinations early in the morning and do not return until the last ferry arrives
  • Last bus leaves Asau / Falealupo at 9am
  • Last bus leaves Manase at 11am
  • Smaller Change: Have small denomination notes & coins
  • Extra Luggage Cost: Charges may apply for carrying luggage.

ALWAYS CONFIRM WITH THE BUS DRIVER TO ENSURE YOU ARE ON THE CORRECT BUS!

Cycling

With its quiet roads and beautiful scenery, cycling is a great way to get around in Savaii. See more on cycle touring in our Activities section. The coast ring road is well sealed with few cars but normal safety precautions are needed.  A small number of resorts have some bikes for hire.  For quality touring bikes, hire from Bike Samoa - ross@outdoors.co.nz (minimum 3 day hire applies).
