Cycling

The coastal ring road — with resorts dotted at convenient distances apart — makes Savaii an ideal cycle touring destination.

Ride beside sparkling blue lagoons and through lush rainforest, while visiting traditional villages along the way, seeing local plantations, and making new friends.

Build in rest days at a resort or beach fale for a truly relaxing and enjoyable trip.

The coastal ring road is well sealed with few cars, however, normal safety precautions are needed and a moderate level of fitness is required.

Bring your bike from home or arrange to hire one from Bike Samoa:

Suggested itinerary

Our itinerary goes anti-clockwise, reverse the days to go clockwise!  Build in extra days for exploring and relaxing on the beach.
Day 1 — Salelologa to Lano (20 km, mostly level)
Stay: Joelan's Beach Fales or Lauiula Beach Fales.

Day 2 — Lano to Sunshine Coast (30 to 40 km, 20 km of undulating terraces but otherwise level)
Stay: Bayview Resort (Saleaula), Le Lagoto Resort & Spa or Savaii Lagoon Resort (Fagamalo), or one of the Manase Beach Fales.
Recommended rest day.

Day 3 — Sunshine Coast to Asau or Vaisala (50 km, 20 km level, 15 km uphill to past Aopo, and 10 km down to Asau)
Stay:  Va-i-Moana Seaside Lodge (western end of Asau) or Vaisala Hotel (Vaisala).
Recommended rest day.

Day 4 — Asau or Vaisala to Falealupo-Tai (20 km, hilly)
Stay: Falealupo Beach Fales.
Alternatively, skip Falealupo and bike straight to Satuiatua (the Falealupo loop is approximately 20km).

Day 5 — Falealupo-Tai to Satuiatua (40 km, 10 km uphill from Falealupo then mostly level)
Stay: Satuiatua Beach Resort.
Recommended rest day.

Day 6 — Satuiatua to Salelologa (55km, mostly level, some undulating terraces)
Stay: Lusia's Lagoon Chalets.

Helpful Hints

Biking in the tropics can be much more enjoyable than walking as you generate your own cooling breeze as you bike along.

Here's our top tips to enjoy biking in hot weather:
  • Savaii roads are quiet, and the drivers usually very considerate, so take normal safety precautions and stay alert.
  • Drink plenty!  Bottled water, soft drinks and niu (young coconuts) are available around the island.  Coconuts are ideal for rehydration, being full of electrolytes — many elite athletes  now drink coconut water post exercise too.  Young coconuts are straw coloured; dark brown coconuts are used for making cream and oil.
  • There is little temperature variation between early morning and midday so you can sleep in as there is not a lot of benefit in starting out at the crack of dawn.
  • Take your time, particularly on the longer or hillier days; it is not a race so make sure you have lots of short stops.
  • Samoan's love ice cream — both New Zealand and local brands are available from most stores.
  • Stay in the middle or smaller ring at the front (low pressure) and maintain a steady leg spin (cadence) — you will find it easier, you get fitter, and your legs will thank you for it!
  • Invest in light weight bike shorts and a performance bike top made of moisture wicking fabric.
  • Bike tyres (26inch) are available around Savaii, but tubes and repair kits less so.  If bringing your own bike, bring a spare tube, puncture repair kit and a pump.
  • It is fine for tourists to bike on a Sunday.  Most shops are closed on the Sabbath although many will open early morning and / or again in the evening.
